Being a history nut I know the need to understand what happened before you, I mean after all, how can you tell what direction you're going if you don't know where you've been? I remember my first real brush with history - standing in the Porta Nigra, the ancient Roman city gate in Trier Germany, later that year I was standing in Rome itself. What a blast in the past! It breaks my heart to see society as a whole not only ignoring history but destroying it in acts of selfish ignorance.
