Did the Prince of Peace really hate religion? The bible is very clear about Jesus and his discussions with the Pharisees, He even had Seven Woe's for them. So He clearly doesn't like religion because he didn't like the Pharisees. The Pharisees believed in what we now call The Old Testament and believed it was the inspired word of God, but they also gave equal authority to oral tradition and attempted to defend this position by saying it went all the way back to Moses
Then there were the Sadducees. the Sadducees believed that only the written law of Moses was authoritative, they saw worship at the Temple as the main focus of the Law (which meant that when the Temple was destroyed in 70 AD the Sadducees were destroyed too) Because the Sadducees were more concerned with politics than religion, they were unconcerned with Jesus until they became afraid He might bring unwanted Roman attention. It was at this point that the Sadducees and Pharisees united and conspired to put Christ to death. The Sadducees are also implicated in the death of James by the historian Josephus.
Money changers in the temple, the whip made of cords, clearly Jesus doesn't like religion, right?

Hi Doug,
ReplyDeleteVery interesting series of short videos! I've gotten something from each of them you've posted.
The James 1.26-27 quote in this one specifically points out the need for Christians to "remain unspotted from the world". Not so easy to do when much of the visible church is the world. Wish the makers of the short had said something about how that applies today.
