About

Per Fidem Intrepidus means "Fearless Through Faith". My courage isn't my own, it comes from the Holy Spirit, it's my faith in God and my personal savior Christ Jesus that calms my fears and allows me to move forward in this fallen world. Personally I'm afraid of a lot of stuff, but having the faith that Jesus adopted me as his little, sin filled, brother keeps me going.

WWUTT Wednesday - Use Words

I have always abhorred the trite bumpersticker philosophy "Preach the Gospel, if necessary use words". For one thing it's wrong theologically, historically, and spiritually. To me it's always seemed a bit rude and arrogant claiming that those who "practice the Gospel" are more faithful than those who verbally preach it. I know atheists who live a life such that you wouldn't know they do not believe God until they opened their mouths.

As for Francis, he never said such a thing, nor did he follow such unbiblical teaching. Mark Galli, senior managing editor at Christianity Today, wrote an article on this false quote (as well as a biography on Francis) He explains that Francis was quite a preacher, actually more along the lines of Jonathan Edwards or Billy Sunday:
His words were neither hollow nor ridiculous, but filled with the power of the Holy Spirit, penetrating the marrow of the heart, so that listeners were turned to great amazement.
Francis pent a great deal of time using his words when he preached, “sometimes preaching in up to five villages a day, often outdoors. In the country, Francis often spoke from a bale of straw or a granary doorway. In town, he would climb on a box or up steps in a public building. He preached to any who gathered to hear the strange but fiery little preacher from Assisi.” He was sometimes so animated and passionate in his delivery that “his feet moved as if he were dancing.”

As for preaching the Gospel...

No Peace For The Wicked x 2

I was listening to a sermon by Dr. Tony Snow on my way in to work and he was discussing Jehovah Shalom, a title for God which only occurs once in the bible in Judges 6:24. (Actually it's not a title for God, it's the name of an alter that Gideon made to worship God) Jehovah Shalom means "God is Peace", an interesting name for an alter considering what was happening to Israel at the time. (Judges 6 is an incredible read, God, Jesus, Baal, and Ashrah are all in there)

During the sermon Dr. Tony mentioned "there is no peace for the wicked" in Isaiah, now I had always heard it "There is no rest for the wicket" but that was from my Mom who could mangle a metaphor like no ones business (she's the one who coined the phrase "If the truth hurts, wear it"). When I got to my computer I looked up "no peace for the wicked" and found that it is in Isaiah, twice.
There is no peace for the wicked," says the LORD. (Isaiah 48:22 and Isaiah 57:21)
When something is repeated in the bible, it is something that God wants you to understand. First I double checked to make sure that there was no fiddling around with the translation and found that both verses are exactly the same except for in Isaiah 48:22 God is called YÄ•hovah ("the existing One") and in Isaiah 57:21 He is called 'elohiym (A plural word (gods) but used in a singular tense). This verse is repeated almost verbatim, so it's got to be important.

Random Bits

We're back! 4,430 miles, nine states, 13 days, lots of fun and relaxation, and yes, driving that kind of distance is relaxing to me. (We love our car!) We found that my COPD is much easier to deal with at sea level, and what a blessing it was to not have to drag around that heavy oxygen tank all the time (and yes Dr. Awesome, I monitored my O2 saturation at all times)

We got to see a lot of country we've never seen before, met some wonderful, wonderful people, and discovered that Georgia peaches are not quite as good as Colorado peaches (it's true, really). My bride fell in love with Amelia Island in north east Florida, but she really went wild over the Pensacola area. We even talked about moving there, but the fact that our children and grand children remain in the north tempered that decision

We're not sure when, if ever, we'll have the chance to tour the country like this again so we are grateful to God for allowing us to get away for a while.

Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart
And do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He will make your paths straight.
